SCAN Health Plan
This is one of the older projects in my portfolio, and I was one of several backend developers. SCAN Health Plan is a not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plan with over 100,000 members.
- Five Audiences, One Site. The top-level navigation was the audience list: people shopping for a plan, current members, the family and caregivers who manage someone’s care, providers, and brokers. Each section had its own landing page and, for three of them, its own login.
- Search Tools. The largest piece of the site. One tool covered seven kinds of search: doctors, specialists, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, pharmacies, other providers, and the drug formulary, each with facets such as distance from an address, medical group, languages spoken, specialty, zip code, and drug therapeutic category.
- Plan Years. Coverage and formularies change every year, and during open enrollment people are shopping next year’s plans while still using this year’s.
- Member and Caregiver Accounts. Members could register to read plan documents online instead of waiting for mail, including their Explanation of Benefits, which had its own backend service. Registration also let a member formally authorize caregivers to access and administer their account, with its own separate sign-in and recovery flows.
- Regulated Content. Medicare plan sites answer to CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), which required last-updated time stamps in the footer.
- Failover Database. The SQL Server database was configured with a replicated failover instance to avoid issues if one of them encountered an error.
